Gauges have been in existence since the 17th Century and it is an essential tool used within construction setting and also in many other industries. The are two most common kinds of gauges commonly used. They include thread gauges and screen gauges.
About Screw Gauges
William Gascoigne more than 400 years ago invented screw gauges. He was a British Astronomer who initially came up with the tool today known as screw gauge which was used as means of measuring stars. Screw gauges have since then been used in many different fields for various applications and today they have been most commonly used as a measuring tool to get the diameter of wires. Nevertheless, no matter the purpose the screw gauge is being or to be used for, the major principle behind this amazing tool remains the same and that is to accurately get or measure the distance existing between the anvil and the spindle of the screw gauge when applied to an object.
How to use a Screw Gauge
On the interior part of the anvil you will see a U-shaped frame. Here, you place the wire that needed to be measured against the anvil.At the far distance from the U-shaped frame towards the end of the cylinder's spindle there is the screw gauge ratchet. For the spindle to move in the direction of the anvil, the ratchet has to be clockwise turned. Turn the ratchet till the wire is squeezed between the spindle and the anvil.
Immediately the wire has been adequately sandwiched, the ratchet will click . At this point, the spindle will not move any further.In order to find the diameter of the wire, horizontally look at the scale measurement lining up with the spindle. Note down the last value you can see on the thimble's edge. Vertically look at the scale measurement on the thimble. Here you will be able to see a horizontal line that lined up with the vertical scale. Write down this value. You will see the vertical scale measurement reading on the thimble. Write down this value.Finally you add these values together based to the respective subdivision of scale which are found on the screw gauge. The measurement is accurate on an imperial scale to a place value of thousandth of an inch.
About Thread Gauges
Just like screw gauges, there are quite a number of different types of thread gauges which are used for diverse purposes. The most common use of a thread gauge is obtaining thread angle checking and the diameter, determining the pitch and measurement of screw threads.
How to use a Thread Gauge
First, hold the bolt to be measured in one hand. Ensure there is plenty of light so that you can clearly read the measurement.Open up the gauge then place a blade along the bolt threads. In case the teeth on the blade do not fit in securely, you choose another one till the teeth and the bolt threads snugly fit together.The value on the blade indicates the number of threads per inch. In order to measure a nut, just use the same procedure but now place the blade inside part of the nut.
